The distinctive charm of the Joo Chiat district can be traced back to its Peranakan roots. It is a quiet residential area formerly dominated by wealthy Straits Chinese families or what we call, the Peranakans. Many of the older Peranakan homes in Katong, once seaside villas, still stand tall and picturesque today.
The Katong area was originally inhabited by both Peranakans as well as Eurasians. Peranakans are usually known to come from a mixture of Chinese and Malay backgrounds, and were the earliest Chinese immigrants to Singapore, and assimilated some of their customs and language. An outstanding result of this blend of culture is the cuisine that evolved.
See how popiah is done at a hawker food stall and sample their freshly made popiah and kuey pie tees - two of the most popular Peranakan snacks. Alternatively sample some colorful Peranakan Kuehs (traditional cakes) and taste the unique blend of gula melaka, coconut and pandan flavours.
